ReleaseNotes

Got Questions?

Quick answers about ReleaseNotes plans, features, and how teams publish product updates.

What is ReleaseNotes?

ReleaseNotes helps SaaS teams turn shipped work into consistent, professional customer updates. It works with your AI agent to gather what changed, draft polished release notes in your company’s voice, and publish them across a hosted changelog, in-app widgets, and email.

Who is ReleaseNotes for?

ReleaseNotes is built for product managers, founders, and developers at small and growing software companies. Especially teams that ship regularly but do not have a dedicated product marketing function.

What is the difference between release notes and a changelog?

The terms are often used interchangeably. A changelog is usually the ongoing history of product changes, while a release note is an individual update written for customers or stakeholders. ReleaseNotes gives you both: individual release pages and a browsable changelog containing all of your published updates.

How does ReleaseNotes save time?

ReleaseNotes keeps drafting, editing, publishing, and distribution in one workflow. You can prepare an update, refine the wording, and publish it across your hosted changelog, in-app widgets, and email without maintaining separate content in each channel.

Do I need a product marketer to use it?

No. Reusable publishing workflows and ready-made themes help product and engineering teams create professional updates themselves.

Creating release notes

Can I create release notes from my AI coding tools?

Yes. ReleaseNotes provides an MCP server that lets compatible AI tools work with projects, releases, and recent activity. This makes it possible to draft or update release notes from the tools your team already uses.

Can I create release notes manually?

Yes. You can write and edit releases directly in ReleaseNotes, add rich content and images, organize updates with tags, and preview the result before publishing.

Can I schedule a release?

Yes. Releases support future publish dates, so you can prepare an update in advance and set its release date.

Publishing and distribution

Do I get a hosted changelog?

Yes. Every project gets a hosted release notes site on a ReleaseNotes subdomain. It is mobile responsive and gives customers a dedicated place to browse product updates.

Can I use my own domain?

Yes, on the Business plan. You can connect a custom domain using a CNAME so your release notes live on a domain that matches your brand.

Can I show release notes inside my product?

Yes, on Teams and Business. Add the ReleaseNotes JavaScript snippet to show an in-app popup, an unread-updates badge, or a latest-release banner.

Can customers subscribe by email?

Yes, on Teams and Business. Customers can subscribe and unsubscribe through hosted forms, and your team can send a published release to the subscriber list when it is ready.

Are emails sent automatically when I publish?

No. Publishing a release and announcing it by email are separate actions. This gives your team a chance to preview the email and decide exactly when subscribers should receive it.

Does ReleaseNotes provide an RSS feed?

Yes. Hosted release sites include an RSS feed so customers can follow updates in their preferred feed reader.

Can I publish private release notes?

Yes, on Business. Private releases are available only to authenticated users, making them suitable for customer-only, partner, or internal stakeholder updates.

Branding and customization

Can I customize how my release notes look?

Yes. Free includes a standard responsive theme, Teams adds premium themes, and Business gives you access to custom HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for full design control.

Can I add my logo and branding?

Yes. You can add project and email logos. Business customers can go further with a custom domain, custom theme code, and a custom sender email address.

Are release sites mobile friendly?

Yes. ReleaseNotes themes are designed to work across desktop and mobile screen sizes.

Can I control whether search engines index my changelog?

Yes, on Teams and Business. Paid plans can control search-engine indexing for the hosted release site. Free changelogs are configured not to be indexed.

Analytics and feedback

Can I see whether customers read my updates?

Yes, on Teams and Business. ReleaseNotes tracks views across the hosted site, widget, API, and email, and provides subscriber and email engagement reporting.

Can customers react to a release?

Yes, on Teams and Business. Simple sentiment reactions let customers give quick feedback on an update, and your team can review those responses in ReleaseNotes.

Plans and billing

Is there a free plan?

Yes. Free includes a hosted release notes site for one team member, with up to five recent releases from the last 90 days and the standard responsive theme.

Is there a free trial?

Yes. New projects receive a 14-day trial with no card required.

What happens when the trial ends?

If you do not choose a paid plan, the project moves to Free. Paid-only capabilities stop being available, while the hosted changelog continues under the Free plan limits.

Is pricing per seat?

No. Pricing is per project. Teams and Business include unlimited team members.

What is a project?

A project relates to a single software product's changelog. Often, companies might have multiple products that they sell, each requiring their own changelog. ReleaseNotes is priced per project.

How are email subscribers billed?

On Teams, subscribers cost $10 per block of 1,000. Business includes unlimited email subscribers.

Which plan should I choose?

Choose Free for a simple public changelog managed by one person. Choose Teams when you need collaboration, widgets, email broadcasts, premium themes, and analytics. Choose Business when you also need custom branding, a custom domain, private releases, or unlimited subscribers.

Can I pay by invoice?

Invoice billing is available on the Business plan.

Setup and access

How long does setup take?

Most teams can create a project and publish their first release in a few minutes. Adding an in-app widget or a custom domain requires a small amount of additional setup.

Do I need a developer to install ReleaseNotes?

No developer is needed for the hosted changelog or manual publishing. A developer may be helpful for adding the JavaScript widget, connecting a custom domain, or building a custom API workflow.

Can multiple people manage a project?

Yes. Teams and Business include unlimited team members, with owner, manager, and member roles. Business also supports viewer accounts for private releases.
